On Sept. 27, 2016, residents, family members and friends gathered at The Lane House in Crawfordsville, Indiana, for the fun-filled End-of-Summer Barbecue and Picnic.
The weather was perfect – a sunny 72-degree evening with a gentle breeze. Tables, decorated with a traditional checkered red and white theme, helped set the visual stage for the event.
Two grills were set up, allowing the dietary “grill masters” to cook and serve fresh off the fire the traditional barbecue fare of hot dogs, hamburgers and cheeseburgers. Side dishes included baked beans, watermelon and homemade potato salad. Adding to the picnic feel were soda pops and bottled waters iced down in coolers… and, of course, six flavors of ice cream and sherbet for dessert!
Department leaders were instrumental in the success of the evening, according to Cynthia Stevens, executive director.
“I can’t thank my team enough for all their work to make this event a wonderful time for our residents,” said Stevens. “They helped with all the setup, served all our residents and families so those in attendance could relax and enjoy the event. Then they stayed and cleaned up afterward.”
More than 65 residents and guests attended, and even residents who were unable to join the festivities outside got to enjoy the grilled goodies for their evening meal. The facility also served all staff. The grilling team prepared approximately 100 burgers and 50 hot dogs!
Residents and guests raved about the picnic, and many residents were overheard the next morning during breakfast going on and on about how much fun they and their families had.
Bill Schalk, husband of one of the residents, summed it up the best, stating, “It wasn’t just a great meal. You also created a lasting summer memory for us.”
